ABIGAIL

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Abigail developed in late February 2001 from a tropical low that organised within a monsoon trough over the Coral Sea. The system first made landfall as a Category 1 cyclone near the far north Queensland coast just north of Cairns around 24 February, then weakened as it tracked across the Cape York Peninsula. Upon moving into the Gulf of Carpentaria, the system underwent rapid intensification over the warm waters, strengthening to a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of around 120 km/h, gusts to 165 km/h, and a minimum central pressure of 970 hPa.

The cyclone made its second landfall on the night of 26–27 February, with the eyewall passing directly over Mornington Island before crossing the mainland near the Queensland–Northern Territory border. Mornington Island experienced widespread vegetation damage and downed power infrastructure, though structural damage to buildings was largely minor. The system subsequently degraded to a tropical low, tracking westward across the Northern Territory and into Western Australia, where it eventually dissipated over the Western Desert around 8 March.

Abigail's most significant impact was extensive inland flooding, which compounded inundation already caused by earlier cyclones that season. Remote communities faced prolonged road closures and required aerial supply drops. No fatalities were directly attributed to the storm. The name Abigail was retired from the Australian cyclone naming list following the 2000–01 season.
