Alessia

History

Tropical Cyclone Alessia developed from a tropical low on 20 November 2013 over the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 1,465 km north of RAAF Learmonth in Western Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology classified it as a Category 1 cyclone on 21 November while it was located around 390 km north of Broome. A notably small system, Alessia tracked eastward, brushing the Kimberley coast on 23 November before making landfall near the Daly River mouth in the Northern Territory's Top End on 24 November — the first cyclone to affect the Northern Territory in November since Cyclone Joan in 1975. After weakening to a tropical low over land, the remnants emerged into the Gulf of Carpentaria on 26 November and gradually reorganised. Alessia reached its peak intensity on 27 November with winds of 85 km/h and a central pressure of 991 hPa before making a final landfall near Wollogorang. The system persisted erratically before being last noted on 1 December.

Overall impacts were minor. The strongest gusts recorded reached 109 km/h on Centre Island, and rainfall peaked at 290.4 mm, also on Centre Island. Flash flooding along the Goomadeer River in Arnhem Land caught seven people in two vehicles, with one person swept downstream before being rescued. No fatalities were reported, and damage across affected regions was minimal.
