Anggrek
2010-11 season · AU201011_01U
History
Tropical Cyclone Anggrek was an early-season system that developed during the 2010–11 Australian region cyclone season. The precursor tropical low (designated 01U) formed southwest of Sumatra, Indonesia, on 28 October 2010, and was named Anggrek by the Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre on 31 October as it intensified to a Category 1 system on the Australian scale. Moving southeastward into the Bureau of Meteorology's area of responsibility, it briefly reached Category 2 intensity before passing to the east of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the early hours of 2 November. The system then began weakening and was downgraded to a tropical low by 4 November, with its remnants entering the south-west Indian Ocean the following day as a circulation centre devoid of organised convection.
As Anggrek passed the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, residents experienced heavy rain, gusty winds, and minor damage including downed trees and power lines, but no fatalities were recorded. The storm made no landfall on mainland Australia. In post-season analysis, the Bureau of Meteorology reclassified Anggrek as a tropical low rather than a tropical cyclone, determining that gale-force winds had not extended more than halfway around the system's centre at any point during its lifespan.
