Anika
2021-22 season · AU202122_23U
History
Tropical Cyclone Anika developed in the Timor Sea during the 2021–22 Australian region cyclone season. The system, which originated as Tropical Low 23U, organised and was upgraded to a named tropical cyclone before tracking toward the northwest Australian coast. Anika made its first landfall northeast of Kalumburu in Western Australia, then made a second landfall east of Pardoo. Notably, the cyclone briefly developed a more organised inner core while over land, attributed to the brown ocean effect — a phenomenon where moisture from saturated soils can sustain or intensify a tropical system inland. The Bureau of Meteorology served as the primary monitoring agency for the system. Anika formed around the same period as Tropical Cyclone Vernon, which was undergoing rapid intensification nearby and eventually peaked as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone before moving into the South-West Indian Ocean. The two systems interacted during this period. Anika's occurrence was part of a season that, despite a record number of tropical lows forming, produced slightly below-average overall tropical cyclone activity, with ten named systems in total and two reaching severe tropical cyclone status.
