ANNETTE

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Annette developed in mid-December 1994 during the 1994–95 Australian region cyclone season. The system organised over the southeast Indian Ocean, with naming occurring on 15 December as it consolidated several hundred kilometres north-northwest of Port Hedland. After remaining nearly stationary briefly, Annette tracked southeast toward the Western Australian coast, undergoing rapid intensification to reach Category 4 intensity with sustained winds of around 200 km/h and a minimum central pressure estimated near 925–933 hPa.

The cyclone made landfall near Mandora Station, approximately 240 kilometres east of Port Hedland, on 18 December. Rather than quickly weakening over the interior, Annette was carried southeastward across the continent by strong upper-level winds, maintaining gale-force conditions before undergoing extratropical transition and exiting into the Great Australian Bight around 20 December.

Coastal impacts were significant. Mandora Station, Wallal Downs Station, and the nearby Sandfire Roadhouse sustained extensive structural damage. A storm surge estimated at around four metres above normal tide levels struck the coast, and between 500 and 1,000 head of cattle were lost, having been trapped on coastal beaches. Offshore oil and gas platforms on the North West Shelf evacuated non-essential personnel as a precaution. Despite the storm's intensity and the damage sustained, no human fatalities were recorded, a result attributed to effective early warnings and the sparsely populated nature of the landfall region.
