Caleb
2016-17 season · AU201617_23U
History
Tropical Cyclone Caleb formed during the 2016–17 Australian region cyclone season. The system developed in the northern Australian region and intensified as it tracked through favourable environmental conditions. Caleb reached its peak intensity as a tropical cyclone on the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's classification scale before making landfall along the northern Australian coastline.
The cyclone brought significant rainfall and wind impacts to coastal communities in its path, consistent with the broader 2016–17 season, which was notably active despite being classed as slightly below average in named storm numbers. The season as a whole recorded an unusually high number of tropical lows — the greatest number monitored in a single season — and proved to be the second-costliest Australian region cyclone season on record, with total damages reaching approximately AUD $3.7 billion, though the bulk of that figure was attributable to Cyclone Debbie rather than Caleb.
Caleb was one of nine named tropical cyclones to form during the 2016–17 season, which ran officially from 1 November 2016 to 30 April 2017. The season was monitored by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres in Perth, Darwin, and Brisbane, along with international agencies including the United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
