Dahlia
2017-18 season · AU201718_03U
History
Tropical Cyclone Dahlia originated as a tropical depression in late November 2017, first identified by TCWC Jakarta on 24 November while located approximately 1,500 kilometres west of Jakarta, Indonesia. Jakarta formally upgraded the system to a named tropical cyclone on 29 November, making Dahlia notable as part of the first occasion when at least two cyclones were named by TCWC Jakarta within a single season. The United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center designated the system as 01S the following day.
Bureau of Meteorology best track analysis determined that Dahlia reached Category 2 intensity, with sustained winds of 50 knots and a minimum central pressure of 985 hPa, achieved around 1 December. The cyclone held this intensity for several hours before tracking southeastward and beginning to weaken rapidly on 2 December, a process influenced by its interaction with the remnants of ex-Tropical Cyclone Cempaka. Dahlia underwent a brief period of reintensification on 3 December before the Bureau of Meteorology issued its final bulletin early on 4 December, with TCWC Perth monitoring the system until 5 December. Dahlia did not make landfall and remained at sea throughout its lifetime. No casualties or significant damage resulting from the cyclone were recorded in the available sources.
