DARYL

History
Tropical Cyclone Daryl was one of several systems to develop during the 2005–06 Australian region cyclone season, an above-average season that officially ran from 1 November 2005 to 30 April 2006. Systems in the region were monitored by the Bureau of Meteorology's Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres in Perth, Darwin and Brisbane, together with TCWC Port Moresby; Daryl fell within the Perth centre's area of responsibility.
The system began as a tropical low situated over land, and TCWC Perth commenced issuing tropical cyclone advisories on it on 17 January 2006. The following day the low moved offshore into Kuri Bay, on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, where it acquired sufficient organisation to be named Tropical Cyclone Daryl.
Daryl strengthened steadily once over water. On 21 January it was assessed in real time as having reached severe tropical cyclone status, although a review of the system conducted after the season concluded revised its peak intensity down to 55 knots, placing it at Category 2 on the Australian scale.
For the following two days the cyclone travelled roughly parallel to the Western Australian coastline, holding Category 2 strength for most of that period, before turning onto a south-westerly heading. Weakening followed, and on 23 January Daryl was downgraded to a tropical low.
Daryl remained offshore throughout its life and did not make landfall at any point along the Western Australian coast.
