History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie developed from a tropical low-pressure system over the Arafura Sea on 16 December 2003. The system drifted westward while gradually organising, then overnight on 18–19 December was officially named Tropical Cyclone Debbie. It subsequently turned south-west toward the Australian continent, intensifying rapidly under favourable atmospheric conditions and warm sea surface temperatures.

Debbie reached its peak intensity on 20 December as a Category 3 Severe Tropical Cyclone, with maximum sustained winds of around 120 km/h, gusts up to 165 km/h, and a central pressure of 970 hPa. Late on 20 December, the cyclone crossed the Arnhem Land coast of the Northern Territory, making landfall between Goulburn Island and Maningrida. Wikipedia notes the crossing occurred at Category 1 intensity, though the manually provided source indicates the system was still at Category 3 strength at landfall.

After coming ashore, Debbie weakened rapidly and decayed into a tropical rain depression by 21 December, tracking south-west through the inland Northern Territory and into the far north-east of Western Australia before dissipating on 23 December. Because landfall occurred along a remote and sparsely populated stretch of coastline, impacts were limited. Minor structural damage to roofs and outbuildings was reported in communities near the landfall zone, and the system's remnants produced notable rainfall further inland, including around 103 mm at Warmun. No fatalities or serious injuries were recorded.
