History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Elaine developed during the 1998–99 Australian region cyclone season after a monsoon trough spawned an area of low pressure on 12 March 1999. The system moved westward through a favourable environment, intensifying into Tropical Cyclone Elaine on 15 March and reaching severe tropical cyclone status the following day. Elaine achieved its peak intensity of approximately 185 km/h on 17 March before beginning to weaken as it turned southward toward Western Australia.
By 20 March, Elaine had weakened back to tropical cyclone strength and crossed the Western Australian coast between Kalbarri and Geraldton with winds of around 56 km/h. The system degenerated into a remnant low shortly after landfall and dissipated later that same day.
The most significant impacts were felt at Moora, where the town experienced some of its heaviest rainfall on record. The Moore River burst its banks, causing severe flooding and prompting the evacuation of nearly 2,000 residents. No fatalities were reported as a result of the storm. Due to the flooding and damage caused at Moora, the name Elaine was retired and replaced with Emma, a name that would later be used in 2006 for another cyclone affecting the same region.
