History

Tropical Cyclone Esther developed in the Australian region during the 2019–20 tropical cyclone season. The system formed in the Gulf of Carpentaria and tracked across northern Australia, making landfall over the Northern Territory. Esther reached Category 1 intensity on the Australian scale before crossing the coast and subsequently weakening as it moved inland across the continent.

The cyclone brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to remote areas of the Northern Territory and Queensland as it tracked eastward after landfall. Communities across the Gulf Country experienced flooding associated with the system's passage, with some roads cut off and properties affected by rising waters. Given the sparsely populated nature of the region, the human toll was limited, though the flooding caused disruption to local communities and infrastructure in affected areas. Esther was notable for its slow movement after crossing the coast, which prolonged rainfall impacts over a wide area of inland northern Australia before the system finally weakened and dissipated.
