Fina

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina originated as a low-pressure system tracked by the Bureau of Meteorology in the Timor Sea from 15 November 2025, developing into a named tropical cyclone on 18 November. The system underwent a complex track through the Top End of the Northern Territory, making an initial landfall on the Coburg Peninsula on 21 November before intensifying further as it crossed the Van Diemen Gulf. It made a second landfall on Melville Island on 22 November as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone. Fina subsequently re-emerged into the Timor Sea and peaked at Category 4 intensity on 23 November, with a minimum central pressure of 952 hPa. It then weakened to Category 3 and made a final landfall near the mouth of the Berkeley River on the northeastern Kimberley coast on 24 November, rapidly deteriorating to a tropical low before dissipating on 26 November.

The cyclone produced significant impacts across the Darwin region and surrounding areas. Darwin Airport closed in preparation for the storm, and major supermarkets shut down as residents stocked up on supplies. Royal Darwin Hospital declared a code brown emergency, and part of its external wall collapsed. Wind gusts reached around 109 km/h at Crocker Island Airport, while Middle Point recorded 430 millimetres of rainfall in a single 24-hour period. Power outages affected at least 19,500 customers across Darwin, Palmerston, and the Tiwi Islands. Total losses were estimated at AU$84 million.
