FLOYD
2005-06 season · AU200506_16U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Floyd developed in the Timor Sea, northwest of Australia, on 21 March 2006. The system moved gradually westward into the Indian Ocean, slowly building in organisation and intensity. When observed by NASA's Terra satellite on 22 March, Floyd carried peak winds of approximately 120 kilometres per hour, with forecasts at the time anticipating further strengthening to around 170 kilometres per hour over the following days. The cyclone was not expected to make landfall on any major landmass, though Christmas Island, situated well off the Western Australian coast in the Indian Ocean, was identified as a potential area of concern as the system tracked westward. Floyd was classified as a Severe Tropical Cyclone, placing it in the higher categories on the Australian tropical cyclone scale. The system formed during the 2005–06 Australian region cyclone season, which was considered an above-average season overall. No significant casualties or major damage from Floyd are documented in the available sources, consistent with the storm's track remaining largely over open ocean away from populated coastlines.
