History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Gillian developed on 8 March 2014 from a tropical low in the Gulf of Carpentaria, off northern Australia. It initially moved southeast and made landfall along the western Cape York Peninsula of Queensland on 10 March as a weakening system below tropical cyclone intensity. After tracking back over the Gulf, Gillian briefly regained tropical cyclone status before wind shear and land interaction again reduced it to a tropical low. The system drifted westward across the Top End of northern Australia and subsequently passed over several Indonesian islands, including Timor on 18 March.
On 21 March, Gillian reorganised and regained tropical cyclone status south-southeast of Jakarta. It then underwent rapid intensification, passing near Christmas Island on 22 March and reaching its peak on 23 March, when the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 10-minute sustained winds of 205 km/h and gusts of 285 km/h, placing it at Category 5 on the Australian scale. Increased wind shear caused rapid weakening, and both the BoM and the JTWC discontinued advisories on 26 March.
Far North Queensland experienced prolonged rainfall, with totals of 150–250 mm across parts of Cape York Peninsula. Christmas Island sustained light to moderate damage, with gale-force winds peaking at 96 km/h battering the island for 15 hours, downing thousands of trees and damaging several homes. Swells of 3–5 metres affected Java's southern coastline, and Gillian's circulation also interfered with the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
