IAN

History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ian developed in the monsoon trough during late February 1992, forming from a depression located approximately 300 kilometres south of Java. Unlike a contemporaneous system to its west, Ian initially moved eastward under the influence of a high-amplitude upper trough before recurving southward. The cyclone intensified steadily under favourable conditions, reaching peak intensity on 1 March 1992 with sustained winds of around 215 km/h, making it a severe tropical cyclone.
As Ian tracked toward the Western Australian coast, it passed directly over the Monte Bello Islands and Barrow Island, where wind gusts of up to 205 km/h were recorded. The cyclone made landfall along a sparsely populated section of coastline roughly 75 kilometres east of Onslow at around 2145 UTC on 2 March, after which it weakened rapidly over land and dissipated the following day.
Impacts were largely confined to the offshore islands. On the Monte Bello Islands, a mine sustained extensive damage. At Barrow Island, a storm surge of approximately 1.6 metres caused minor damage to a landing stage. Mainland impacts were minimal, reflecting the remote nature of the landfall location.
