History

Tropical Cyclone Ita developed rapidly off the north coast of Queensland on 23 February 1997. The system initially tracked southward before shifting to the southwest, with its development hampered by northerly upper-level flow situated between an upper low over Queensland and an anticyclone in the Coral Sea. The cyclone reached its lowest central pressure of 994 hPa on 24 February, placing it at the weaker end of the tropical cyclone scale. On that same day, Ita crossed the Queensland coast southeast of Townsville, where it dissipated quickly after making landfall.

Impacts from Ita were relatively limited. Reports from 24 February noted minimal wind damage and moderate flooding across local rivers and creeks. A notable event was the occurrence of a tornado in the Yukan area, which accompanied the system's landfall. Overall, Ita was a short-lived and low-intensity cyclone that caused only minor disruption to the region before quickly losing organisation inland.
