JACOB
2006-07 season · AU200607_12U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Jacob originated as a tropical low in the Timor Sea off the Kimberley coast on 2 March 2007, initially moving slowly westward and not expected to reach cyclone intensity. Convection improved around the system by 7 March, prompting the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Perth to upgrade it to a named tropical cyclone. On the same day, Jacob was further upgraded to a Category 2 system, and a cyclone watch was issued for Christmas Island as the storm tracked west-northwest toward the island. Jacob continued intensifying, reaching Category 3 severe tropical cyclone status on 8 March before briefly weakening back to Category 2. As Jacob slowed and began moving eastward away from Christmas Island, cyclone warnings for the island were cancelled. The system then re-strengthened to Category 3 on 9 March and accelerated. Jacob developed concurrently with Severe Tropical Cyclone George, which was tracking in the same broader region at the time. The available record of Jacob's track and final impacts is incomplete, though the storm's proximity to Christmas Island represented its most significant threat to a populated area during the documented portion of its life.
