History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Jane developed from a tropical low in the monsoon trough over the Timor Sea on 8 April 1992, during the latter stages of the 1991–92 Australian region cyclone season. Tracking southwest into an environment of low wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures, the system organised quickly, reaching tropical cyclone intensity on 9 April. Named by the Bureau of Meteorology's Perth Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Jane intensified rapidly over the following days, attaining Category 4 severe tropical cyclone status on 13 April with sustained 10-minute winds of around 175 km/h and a minimum central pressure of approximately 930 hPa. At peak intensity, the storm was situated roughly 400 km north-northwest of Exmouth and was curving south-southeastward toward the West Pilbara coast, prompting watch and warning declarations for communities including Onslow and Exmouth.

Jane never made landfall. Encountering strong upper-level westerly wind shear on 15 April while still offshore, the cyclone weakened rapidly as its deep convection collapsed, reducing it to a low-end system before the destructive eyewall could reach the coast. The remnants drifted west-southwestward across the Indian Ocean and dissipated entirely by 17 April. No structural damage or casualties were recorded on the mainland. Offshore, North West Shelf oil and gas installations enacted emergency protocols, suspending production and evacuating non-essential personnel as a precaution during the period of coastal threat.
