History

Severe Tropical Cyclone John developed from a tropical low to the southwest of Timor on 9 December 1999, rapidly intensifying as it tracked toward the Pilbara coast of Western Australia. Before making landfall it reached Category 5 strength, with a central pressure of approximately 915 hPa and estimated winds of up to 205 km/h. The cyclone crossed the coast just west of Whim Creek, between Port Hedland and Karratha, at around 8:30 am Western Standard Time on 15 December 1999, by which point its central pressure had risen to between 930 and 940 hPa. It moved inland and dissipated the following day.

Impacts were significant but moderated by the region's sparse population. Cape Lambert recorded sustained winds averaging 150 km/h over five hours, with gusts reaching 210 km/h. Port Hedland endured gale-force conditions for 18 hours and a two-metre storm surge. The historic Whim Creek Hotel, over 110 years old at the time, lost its upper floor. Extensive structural damage was reported across Pilbara pastoral stations, and mining operations were suspended at numerous sites. Newman received around 500 mm of rainfall and experienced flooding. Karratha and Dampier were largely spared serious damage after John turned southeast shortly before landfall rather than continuing directly toward those towns. There were no fatalities associated with the cyclone.
