History

Tropical Cyclone Joshua formed on 17 January 2021 when it crossed into the South-West Indian Ocean basin from the Australian region, arriving as a moderate tropical storm. The system was short-lived, lasting only two days before dissipating on 19 January 2021 after encountering dry air and elevated vertical wind shear, which prevented any further development. Joshua did not make landfall and had no recorded impacts on populated areas during its brief existence in the basin. The cyclone formed as part of the 2020–21 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season, which was considered an above-average season overall, producing 12 named storms with seven reaching tropical cyclone intensity. Joshua's passage was uneventful compared to other systems active during the same season, such as Cyclone Eloise, which struck Madagascar and Mozambique around the same period and caused significant destruction and fatalities across southern Africa.
