History
Tropical Cyclone Kate originated on 21 December 2014, when TCWC Perth identified Tropical Low 04U forming within the monsoon trough to the southeast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The system moved south-eastwards over the following days before turning south-west, passing near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on 23 December. By 24 December it had intensified sufficiently to be named Kate as a Category 1 tropical cyclone. Intensification continued rapidly, with an eye developing, and Kate reached its peak intensity as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone on 25 December. A subsequent eyewall replacement cycle caused weakening on 27 December, and by 30 December Kate had tracked out of the Australian region into the South-West Indian Ocean, carrying 10-minute sustained winds of 150 km/h at that point.
Kate did not make landfall on the Australian mainland. Its most significant impacts were felt on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which the system passed over on 23 December. The islands recorded 107.6 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, causing flooding on Home and West Islands. Additional effects included damage to trees and some property. Kate formed as part of the 2014–15 Australian region cyclone season, which was characterised as slightly below average in overall activity despite producing several intense systems.
