History
Tropical Cyclone Megan developed on 13 March 2024 from a tropical low situated over the Gulf of Carpentaria. The system intensified into a severe tropical cyclone, reaching Category 4 intensity before making landfall on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Megan formed during a notably active stretch of the 2023–24 Australian region cyclone season, which despite an overall below-average number of named storms produced six severe tropical cyclones — an unusually high proportion.
The season as a whole recorded eight named storms and resulted in approximately US$790 million in damage and one fatality, though these figures were overwhelmingly attributable to Cyclone Jasper rather than Megan. Megan was one of several severe cyclones to affect the Northern Territory and Queensland regions during the season, alongside Jasper, Kirrily, Lincoln, Neville, and Olga.
