MONICA

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica developed from a low-pressure system off the coast of Papua New Guinea on 16 April 2006, becoming a named cyclone the following day. It intensified as it tracked westward and made its first landfall on 19 April near Lockhart River in Far North Queensland as a Category 3 system. After crossing into the Gulf of Carpentaria on 20 April, Monica rapidly re-intensified under favourable atmospheric conditions, developing a 37-kilometre-wide eye and reaching Category 5 status on 22 April. It attained peak intensity on 23 April near Cape Wessel, with 10-minute sustained winds of 250 km/h and a central pressure of 916 hPa, making it the most intense cyclone on record to affect Australia in terms of sustained wind speed.

On 24 April, Monica made its second landfall approximately 35 kilometres west of Maningrida in the Northern Territory, still at Category 5 intensity. It weakened dramatically after moving inland, losing 155 km/h of wind speed within 12 hours, and was downgraded to a tropical low later that same day. Its remnants tracked near Darwin on 25 April before dissipating over central Australia on 28 April.

Despite its extraordinary intensity, Monica caused no reported injuries and relatively modest structural damage estimated at around A$6.6 million. Its most significant impact was severe environmental destruction in the Northern Territory, where approximately 7,000 square kilometres of vegetation was defoliated, with recovery expected to take several hundred years.
