NAOMI
1993-94 season · AU199394_01U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Naomi was the opening system of the 1993–94 Australian region cyclone season, developing from a tropical low embedded in an active monsoon trough over the Timor Sea on 15 December 1993. Moving south-southwestward over warm waters with light upper-level wind shear, the system intensified rapidly, attaining tropical cyclone strength late on 15 December and escalating to severe Category 3 status by 16 December. At its peak, Naomi recorded a minimum central pressure of around 960 hPa, with sustained 10-minute winds near 130 km/h and gusts exceeding 180 km/h.
On 17 December, the cyclone made landfall along the southern Kimberley coastline in the vicinity of Wallal, situated between Broome and Port Hedland. Moving inland across the Great Sandy Desert, Naomi rapidly lost intensity and dissipated by 18 December as it was cut off from its oceanic energy source.
Impacts were felt mainly across sparsely populated pastoral land, with Wallal Station, Mandora Station, and nearby properties sustaining wind damage to outbuildings, fences, and windmills. Heavy rainfall caused localised flooding that temporarily disrupted road access, including sections of the Great Northern Highway. Offshore marine operations along the North West Shelf were suspended as a precaution. A fishing vessel was disabled during the storm. No fatalities were recorded.
