History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle originated on 4 January 2013 as a tropical low within a monsoon trough over the Timor Sea, near Timor. The system tracked generally westward over the following days, being formally named Tropical Cyclone Narelle on 8 January. It was upgraded to a severe tropical cyclone on 9 January after developing an eye and turning southward into a region of reduced wind shear. Narelle reached its peak intensity on 11 January as a Category 4 system, with winds of 195 km/h and a central pressure of 930 hPa. The cyclone did not make landfall in Australia, instead passing approximately 330 km northwest of Exmouth on 12 January before steadily weakening. It fell below tropical cyclone strength on 15 January roughly 500 km west of Geraldton.

The storm caused its most significant damage in Indonesia. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas affected Bali and surrounding provinces, flooding more than 10,000 homes in Banten alone. A cargo vessel, the MV Emeline, sank off the Selayar Islands, with 11 of its 17 crew remaining missing. In total, 14 people were killed and several others listed as missing across Indonesia. In Western Australia, impacts were comparatively minor, with gusty winds downing trees around Exmouth, up to 76 mm of rainfall recorded locally, and a minor storm tide peaking at 1.1 m at Onslow without causing significant damage. Industrial operations including iron ore exports and offshore oil facilities were temporarily suspended as a precaution.
