NEVILLE
1991-92 season · AU199192_09U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Neville was a small but intense late-season system that developed in the Timor Sea during April 1992. Its precursor tropical depression formed near the Tanimbar Islands on 4 April, triggered by a strong pulse of the Madden–Julian Oscillation. The depression drifted slowly southeast in an environment of low vertical wind shear before a deep easterly steering flow, generated by a high-pressure ridge over inland Australia, turned the system back towards the southwest. The Darwin Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre named it Neville on 7 April.
Despite its compact size and its proximity to land, Neville intensified explosively almost immediately after naming, deepening as it passed over the northwestern tip of Melville Island. Hurricane-force winds were attained within 24 hours. Moving out into the central Timor Sea, Neville reached its peak late on 8 April as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian scale, with a minimum central pressure near 945 hPa and maximum 10-minute sustained winds of about 200 km/h, with gusts estimated above 270 km/h. This made it the strongest cyclone recorded in the Timor Sea since Cyclone Kathy in 1984.
Shortly after peaking, a passing mid-latitude trough slowed Neville's forward motion and the cyclone traced a small counter-clockwise loop, becoming almost stationary over open water. Prolonged upwelling of cooler sea-surface water beneath the near-stationary system, combined with increasing shear, caused rapid weakening. Neville fell below cyclone intensity on 11 April and dissipated completely on 13 April.
Neville never made a mainland landfall, but its destructive core clipped the northern end of Melville Island and passed close to Bathurst Island. Severe tree damage and widespread forest defoliation were reported across northern Melville Island, and a remote safari lodge was destroyed. Coastal districts of the northwest Top End experienced squally winds and elevated tides, though Darwin avoided serious impacts. Marine gale and storm warnings prompted precautionary shutdowns at offshore drilling rigs on the northern North West Shelf. No injuries or fatalities occurred, and mainland structural damage was negligible. Neville was the only cyclone to form within Darwin's area of responsibility that season.
