Nicholas
2007-08 season · AU200708_11U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Nicholas developed during the 2007–08 Australian region cyclone season and intensified to severe tropical cyclone status before making landfall north of Carnarvon, Western Australia, on 20 February 2008. At the time of landfall it had weakened to a Category 1 system on the Australian scale. The cyclone formed within the area of responsibility of the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Perth and tracked toward the Western Australian coast. While the available record on Nicholas is limited, its landfall near Carnarvon placed it in a region of Western Australia that is periodically affected by tropical cyclone activity. The season overall was considered slightly below average in terms of cyclone activity, and Nicholas was one of several systems to affect the Australian region that year, including Severe Tropical Cyclone Guba, which caused significant loss of life in Papua New Guinea, and Tropical Cyclone Helen, which threatened Darwin. Nicholas's peak intensity as a severe tropical cyclone prior to landfall indicated it reached at least Category 3 strength before weakening on approach to the coast.
