History
Tropical Cyclone Paddy developed from a tropical low (Tropical Low 02U) on 17 November 2021, forming along a trough of low pressure just west of Christmas Island in the Australian region. The system moved slowly near the island over the following days before tracking south-eastward. On 22 November 2021 at 00:00 UTC, the Bureau of Meteorology upgraded it to a Category 1 tropical cyclone on the Australian scale, making Paddy the first named cyclone of the 2021–22 season. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center followed with its own designation later that day.
Paddy reached its peak intensity with 10-minute sustained winds of 40 knots (75 km/h), supported by sea surface temperatures around 28°C, low wind shear, and favourable upper-level divergence. Its central pressure fell to 997 hPa. The cyclone's intensification was short-lived, as increasing north-westerly wind shear rapidly eroded its convection, and by early 23 November it had been downgraded to an ex-tropical cyclone. The Bureau of Meteorology ceased monitoring the system on 24 November 2021.
Paddy remained well away from major landmasses throughout its brief lifespan and did not make landfall. Its primary impact was prolonged rainfall on Christmas Island, where 251.2 mm of rain fell over the five-day period from 17 to 21 November.
