History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Paul developed in April 2000 during the latter stages of the 1999–2000 Australian region cyclone season. The system originated from a monsoonal tropical low that began organising north of the Kimberley region over the eastern Indian Ocean around 11–12 April. It was officially named by the Perth Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre on 13 April, at that point located approximately 1,000 kilometres north of Karratha, Western Australia.

Steered by an upper-level high-pressure system, Paul tracked steadily westward away from the Australian coast and underwent rapid intensification, reaching its peak as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone on 15 April, with sustained winds of around 220 km/h and a central pressure of 915 hPa. These conditions placed it among the most intense storms recorded globally during that month. The system maintained peak intensity into 16 April before encountering increasing wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures, which caused gradual weakening. Paul dissipated below tropical cyclone strength on 20 April over open water.

The cyclone spent its entire lifecycle over the open ocean and made no landfall. As it tracked westward, it passed roughly 200 kilometres south of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on 17 April, though by then it had weakened somewhat and the islands recorded only minor wind gusts. There were no casualties, injuries, or structural damage associated with the storm.
