Robyn
2009-10 season · AU200910_12U
History
Tropical Cyclone Robyn was one of the later systems of the 2009–10 Australian region cyclone season, a below-average year in which eight tropical cyclones developed against a long-term average of around twelve. The season officially ran from 1 November 2009 to 30 April 2010, with warning responsibility for the area shared between the Bureau of Meteorology's centres at Perth, Darwin and Brisbane.
The system that became Robyn was first identified by TCWC Perth on 2 April 2010, when it was designated Tropical Low 12U in waters to the west of Cocos Island, in the far western part of the Australian region. It strengthened steadily over the following day and was classified as a Category 1 tropical cyclone and given the name Robyn at 0000 UTC on 3 April. Continued intensification saw it reach Category 2 on the Australian scale by 0600 UTC on 4 April.
Robyn attained its peak strength at 0000 UTC on 5 April, when Perth assessed it as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone. This peak was short-lived, with the system falling back to Category 2 just six hours later. Weakening continued through the following day, and Robyn was downgraded to Category 1 early on 6 April before being declared a tropical low later the same day. The remnant low tracked westward and passed out of the Australian area of responsibility on 7 April. Robyn remained over open ocean throughout its life and did not cross the coast.
