History
Tropical Cyclone Sadie was a short-lived but fast-developing system that affected Queensland's Cape York Peninsula at the end of January 1994. It began on 29 January as a tropical low embedded in an active monsoon trough over the waters north of the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory, and moved south-eastwards into the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Conditions over the warm, shallow Gulf waters were favourable, and the low organised quickly, prompting the Bureau of Meteorology to classify it as a Category 1 tropical cyclone and assign the name Sadie on 29 January.
Sadie initially tracked southwards before turning and running eastward to east-north-eastward across the Gulf. It reached its peak intensity early on 30 January, with 10-minute maximum sustained winds of about 85 km/h (45 knots), gusts to around 115 km/h and an estimated minimum central pressure near 985 hPa. The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre also issued advisories on the system, designating it Tropical Cyclone 14P.
Landfall occurred late on 30 January on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, with Sadie still at Category 1 strength. Interaction with land eroded the system within hours, and the weakening cyclone turned south-south-eastward, degenerating into a tropical low or rain depression the same day. The remnant low continued east-south-eastward across the peninsula and emerged over the northern Coral Sea on 31 January, dissipating soon afterwards.
Impacts were relatively minor and confined largely to remote communities of northern Cape York, including Weipa, Mapoon and the Northern Peninsula Area, which experienced gale-force gusts and heavy monsoonal rain. The rainfall produced river rises, localised minor flooding and temporary road closures, while damage was limited to vegetation and scattered power line disruptions. No structural destruction of consequence was reported and there were no deaths or injuries.
