History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Sam developed from a tropical low that formed in the Arafura Sea on 28 November 2000. The system drifted westward before entering the Timor Sea, where it strengthened sufficiently to be named on 5 December. An approaching shortwave trough caused Sam to turn southward the following day, and during this southward track the cyclone underwent rapid intensification, reaching peak intensity on 7 December. On 8 December, Sam made landfall near Lagrange on the Western Australian coast. Once inland, the cyclone weakened slowly while curving eastward, persisting as an identifiable system for nearly a week before finally dissipating on 14 December.

At its peak, Sam was rated a severe tropical cyclone. Its most direct impacts were felt in the communities of Bidyadanga and at Anna Springs Station, where buildings sustained considerable damage and trees and power lines were brought down, causing localised power outages. Across a broader area of northern Australia, Sam produced heavy rainfall, with the highest recorded total reaching 520 mm over a 48-hour period at Shelamar. During the storm, 163 undocumented migrants aboard two vessels were feared to have perished, which briefly threatened to make Sam one of the deadliest cyclones in Australian history; however, all individuals were subsequently accounted for. The name Sam was later retired and replaced with Sean.
