History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Savannah developed from a tropical low that formed east of Christmas Island on 8 March 2019, within a monsoon trough extending from Java to the Solomon Islands. The system initially tracked westward, passing south of Christmas Island on 11 March before turning southwest. The Bureau of Meteorology named it Savannah on 13 March as it reached Category 1 intensity, and the storm underwent rapid intensification, peaking as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone on 17 March with ten-minute sustained winds of 175 km/h and a central pressure of 951 hPa. Savannah did not make landfall, but crossed into the South-West Indian Ocean region on 18 March, where responsibility transferred to Météo-France. Increasing wind shear rapidly weakened the system, and it dissipated in the central Indian Ocean on 24 March.

Before reaching cyclone strength, Savannah's precursor tropical low brought prolonged heavy rainfall to Java and Bali, triggering widespread flooding and landslides. Floodwaters up to two metres deep inundated thousands of homes across multiple regencies, displaced more than 5,000 residents, submerged hundreds of hectares of agricultural land, and destroyed bridges and roads. Ten people died, making Savannah the deadliest Australian region cyclone since Tropical Cyclone Cempaka in 2017. Total damage and economic losses were estimated to exceed Rp106 billion (approximately US$7.5 million). Minor impacts were also felt on Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
