History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Sean formed in the Australian region in mid-January 2025, with the Bureau of Meteorology designating the precursor system as Tropical Low 11U on 17 January before naming it Sean on 19 January. The cyclone underwent rapid intensification the following day, reaching peak intensity as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian scale, developing a distinct eye and powerful winds. Sean dissipated within a couple of days of reaching its peak.
The cyclone did not make a direct landfall but brought significant weather impacts to parts of Western Australia. Heavy rainfall and gale-force winds affected the region, with Karratha recording an exceptional 274.4 mm of rain within a 24-hour period on 20 January — a record amount for that location. Sean was the first severe tropical cyclone of the 2024–25 Australian region season, which was itself a notably active season, producing 12 tropical cyclones overall, including 8 at severe intensity — the highest counts since 2005–06.
