History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Selwyn developed within the monsoon trough approximately 650 kilometres east-southeast of Christmas Island in late December 1997. The system intensified into a tropical cyclone on 27 December and reached its peak intensity the following day, with maximum sustained winds of around 110 km/h, qualifying it as a severe tropical cyclone. Selwyn tracked in a west-southwesterly direction, placing it roughly 1,000 nautical miles west of Broome by the afternoon of 29 December. From that point, the system began to weaken rapidly as it shifted to a west-northwesterly track. The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Perth discontinued warnings on 31 December, as winds were expected to drop below gale force. The remnant low continued drifting westward and then southwest, with only occasional convective activity. In early January, warnings were briefly reissued based on forecasts of re-intensification, but Selwyn did not regain tropical cyclone strength. The remnant low was tracked until 3 January 1998, at which point monitoring ceased. Selwyn remained entirely over open ocean throughout its life, making no landfall, and no significant damage or casualties were recorded in connection with the system.
