Tiffany

History

Tropical Cyclone Tiffany developed from a tropical low in the northern Coral Sea, south of Papua New Guinea, with the Bureau of Meteorology first monitoring the area on 4 January 2022. The system was officially designated as a tropical low on 8 January and upgraded to a Category 1 tropical cyclone and named Tiffany on 9 January. It rapidly intensified to Category 2, reaching peak 10-minute sustained winds of 55 knots before weakening as it approached Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland, where it made landfall on 10 January.

The system crossed the Cape York Peninsula, weakening to a tropical low, before re-emerging over the Gulf of Carpentaria and restrengthening to Category 2. It made a second landfall near Ngukurr in the Northern Territory on 12 January, then degraded to a remnant low, tracking westward into Western Australia and eventually reaching central Australia by 17 January.

One fatality occurred in Queensland when a person was caught in floodwaters, and another person was reported missing. Total damage reached at least A$50,000, concentrated in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory, where one house suffered significant damage. Heavy rainfall affected Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia, with multiple locations recording over 150 millimetres within 24 hours. Power outages, downed trees, and flooded roads were also reported across affected areas.
