Unnamed system

History
Tropical Low 29U was a slow-moving tropical weather system that affected Queensland during early March 2026. The system originated as a weak, elongated low pressure area in the northern Coral Sea around 2–3 March, before being officially designated 29U on 4–5 March. Although the Bureau of Meteorology initially assessed a moderate chance of it developing into a named tropical cyclone, upper-level atmospheric conditions produced an asymmetrical structure that separated the low-level circulation from the main convective activity, keeping the system below cyclone intensity throughout its life. Peak sustained winds approached 65 km/h offshore, with stronger gusts limited to marine areas.
On 6 March, the system made landfall on the North Tropical Coast of Queensland between Cairns and Innisfail before weakening into a broad trough and tracking southward into central and southeastern parts of the state. Despite never reaching cyclone strength, 29U proved highly disruptive as a rainfall and flooding event. Heavy, continuous precipitation triggered flash flooding and dangerous riverine rises across the Peninsula, North Tropical Coast, and Tablelands regions, isolating communities and cutting transport links. As the remnant system moved south, significant flooding extended through the Central Coast, Capricornia, Wide Bay, and Southeast Queensland. The impacts were serious enough for the Queensland Government to activate personal hardship assistance and disaster recovery grants across several local government areas.
