History
Tropical Cyclone Upia developed on 25 May 2002, well after the Australian region tropical cyclone season had officially closed on 30 April. Its formation extended activity for the 2001–02 season beyond the standard season window, making it the final named system of that period in the Australian region — an area covering all waters south of the equator between 90°E and 160°E, including Australia, Papua New Guinea, the western Solomon Islands, East Timor and southern Indonesia. Systems in this region are tracked by the Bureau of Meteorology's warning centres in Perth, Darwin and Brisbane, along with TCWC Jakarta and TCWC Port Moresby, with the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issuing unofficial advisories. Upia was one of several cyclones in a season rated as slightly below average, which had also begun unusually early with Tropical Cyclone Alex in late October 2001.
