Vince

History

Tropical Cyclone Vince developed from a tropical low within an active monsoon trough northwest of Western Australia on 9 January 2011, during the 2010–11 Australian region cyclone season. The system initially struggled against strong easterly vertical wind shear, which left its low-level circulation centre exposed. Conditions briefly improved around 12–13 January when an approaching upper-level trough temporarily reduced wind shear, allowing deep convection to consolidate and the system to attain Category 1 status on the Australian scale. At its peak, Vince produced maximum sustained winds of approximately 75 km/h and a minimum central pressure near 995 hPa. The favourable window was short-lived; wind shear quickly resumed, decoupling the convection from the circulation, and Vince weakened below tropical cyclone intensity later on 13 January. The remnant low drifted erratically over open water before dissipating on 16 January.

Vince remained over open ocean throughout its entire lifespan and never made landfall. No structural damage or casualties were recorded. Shipping gale warnings were issued for open ocean lanes in the southeast Indian Ocean, though offshore platforms along Australia's North West Shelf experienced only minimal disruption. The cyclone was a small, short-lived system notable primarily for its brief organisation under hostile atmospheric conditions.
