VINCENT
2000-01 season · AU200001_04U
History
Tropical Cyclone Vincent developed within an active monsoon trough over the eastern Indian Ocean, forming on 7 February 2001 about 900 km to the northwest of Onslow, Western Australia. The parent tropical low was initially held back by vertical wind shear, which suppressed development for several days before conditions became more favourable.
Once it consolidated into a tropical cyclone, Vincent tracked towards the southeast, gradually strengthening as it moved in the general direction of the Western Australian coast. It reached its peak as a Category 2 system on the Australian intensity scale, with maximum sustained winds near 100 km/h.
Vincent subsequently weakened before reaching land, and crossed the Kimberley coast as a tropical low a short distance to the south of Broome. No significant damage or casualties were associated with the system.
Vincent was one of several cyclones to affect the Western Australian coast during a below-average 2000–01 Australian region season.
