History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Walter developed from an atmospheric disturbance in the southeast Indian Ocean on 1 April 2001, and was officially named by the Perth Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre the following day when it was located approximately 260 kilometres east-northeast of Christmas Island. Tracking westward under the influence of a mid-level high-pressure ridge, Walter passed just north of Christmas Island before intensifying further as it shifted toward the southwest. The system reached its peak intensity early on 5 April as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone, with maximum sustained winds of around 165 km/h, gusts estimated up to 230 km/h, and a minimum central pressure of 940 hPa, placing it among the most intense systems of the 2000–01 season. At peak strength, Walter passed approximately 130 kilometres north of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which had been placed under a cyclone watch on 3 April. Residents there experienced heavy rainfall and wind gusts reaching around 90 km/h, though the core of the system remained well offshore. After peak intensity, Walter encountered unfavourable wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures, rapidly weakening to a tropical low by 8 April before dissipating entirely. The cyclone made no landfall, and post-event assessments confirmed no injuries, fatalities, or structural damage across either island territory.
