WYLVA
2000-01 season · AU200001_05U
History
Tropical Cyclone Wylva developed from a tropical low over the Gulf of Carpentaria on 15 February 2001. The system intensified only briefly, reaching Category 1 strength on the Australian scale before turning towards the southern shore of the Gulf.
Wylva crossed the coast near Borroloola in the Northern Territory on the morning of 16 February, having spent only a short time as a named cyclone. Once inland it weakened quickly, but the remnant low proved remarkably persistent, tracking west across northern Australia over the following week before finally dissipating on 22 February in the vicinity of Nanutarra in Western Australia.
Although landfall occurred in a sparsely populated stretch of coastline, the system's remnants were responsible for significant impacts, largely through heavy rainfall and flooding. Damage was estimated at around $13 million, and approximately 700 people were evacuated. Wylva was one of several tropical cyclones recorded during the below-average 2000–01 Australian region season.
